Event schedule

Official events

The official events for the National Day of Catalonia are the result of the collaboration between the Government of Catalonia and the Parliament of Catalonia and include a programme of activities that will run from 8 to 14 September. The main event of the celebration will take place on 10 September at 09:30 pm in Barcelona’s old El Born Market.

On Sunday, 11 September, the traditional wreath laying at the monument of Rafael Casanova will take place, and the Palau de la Generalitat and the Palau del Parlament de Catalunya will hold open house.

12:00 noon. Bartrina Theatre, Reus: Official event held by the Tarragona Territorial Delegation of the Catalan Government, attended by the Speaker of the Catalan Parliament, Carme Forcadell.

7:00 pm. Auditorium of the Catalan Parliament. Award ceremony of the Catalan Parliament’s Gold Medal of Honour, being awarded to Dr Manel Esteller Badosa.

9:30 pm. Official event in Old El Born Market. 

9:00 am. Floral tribute of the Catalan Government, led by President Puigdemont, at the Rafael Casanova monument in Barcelona.

9:05 am. Floral tribute of the Board of the Catalan Parliament, led by the Speaker, Carme Forcadell, at the Rafael Casanova monument in Barcelona.

10:00 am. President Puigdemont meets the Miquelets de Catalunya and La Coronel·la de Barcelona cultural associations in the Catalan Palace of Government’s Carruatges Courtyard.

From 10:30 am to 6:30 pm. Catalan Palace of Government open day.

From 10:00 am to 7:00 pm. Catalan Palace of Parliament open day.

7:00 pm. Blanquerna Cultural Centre/Bookshop (calle Alcalá, 44, Madrid): Catalan National Day-themed institutional act, attended by the Minister of the Presidency, Neus Munté.

Events in the territorial delegations

Sunday, 11 September

9:00 am. Sant Feliu de Guíxols cemetery (Baix Empordà) – Floral tribute at the tomb of the former President of the Catalan Government, Josep Irla.

11:00 am. Girona Provincial Council cloisters (Pujada Sant Martí, 4-5) (Gironès) – Joint institutional act held by Girona Provincial Council, Girona City Council and the Girona Territorial Delegation of the Catalan Government to mark the Catalan National Day.

Saturday, 10 September

7:00 pm. Turó de la Seu Vella, Lleida: Event presided over by the Catalan Minister of Territory and Sustainability, Josep Rull. Speeches by the Lleida Territorial Representative of the Catalan Government, Ramon Farré, and Josep Rull. The event will close with singing from the Orfeó Lleidatà choir and a laurel wreath offered in memory of all the men and women of Lleida who have defended Catalonia’s freedoms.

Thursday, 8 September

12:00 noon. Bartrina Theatre, Reus: Official event with the Speaker of the Catalan Parliament, Carme Forcadell.

Friday, 9 September

19:00 pm. Reials Col·legis de Tortosa (Carrer de St. Domènec, 14- 16): Institutional event with the participation of the director of the Institute of Catalan Letters, Laura Borras, who give a lecture; and the delegate of the Government in the Terres de l'Ebre, Francesc Xavier Pallares, who will deliver a speech. The duo Thing Two will conclude the celebration by performing some musical pieces.

Wednesday, 14 September

7:00 pm. Blanquerna Cultural Centre/Bookshop (calle Alcalá, 44, Madrid): Historian Borja de Riquer will give the lecture “L’Onze de Setembre, avui” (The Eleventh of September Today). The event will be introduced by the Madrid Representative of the Catalan Government, Ferran Mascarell. That will be followed by a musical show, with singer Mònica Green and tenor Roger Reyes singing the Catalan national anthem, Els segadors.

Thursday, 8 September

Maison de l’Europe (35-37 Rue des Francs Bourgeois, 75004 Paris): Debate on possible new states in Europe post-Brexit, from a constitutional perspective: Des nouveaux États dans l’Europe post-Brexit? Un regard depuis le monde constitutionaliste. During the event, the draft Catalan Constitution drawn up by the Construïm group will be presented. The presentation took the form of a round table chaired by members of the Construïm group.

Monday, 12 September

EU Delegation of the Catalan Government. Espai Catalunya Europa. (Rue de la Loi/Wetstraat 227 1040, Brussels): Title: Reception in honour of the Catalan National Day. The EU Delegation of the Catalan Government’s Espai Catalunya Europa in Brussels will host a reception in honour of the Catalan National Day. Catalonia’s Permanent Representative to the EU, Amadeu Altafaj, will lead those in attendance in celebrating the National Day. The event will close with a musical performance by Formiga and Cigale, two artists (one Catalan and the other French) who call themselves 21st-century troubadours and sing traditional songs from various European countries in their original language (French, Catalan, Portuguese, etc.).

Friday, 9 September

6:30 pm. Atrium of Deutsche Bank AG. (Unter den Linden 13-15, 10117 Berlin): Recital of Catalan music and official reception. The Germany Delegation of the Catalan Government will be holding a reception in honour of the Catalan National Day aimed at members of the diplomatic corps, representatives of German institutions, press and the Catalan community. The event will include a recital of Catalan music by a duo comprising the Berlin-resident Catalan pianist Clàudia Ribera i Lladó and the international prizewinning singer of Occitan origin, Sara Gouzy.

Thursday, 8 September

6:30 pm. Institute of Directors (116 Pall Mall, London): Official reception. The UK and Ireland Representative of the Catalan Government will hold a reception in honour of the Catalan National Day, aimed at the diplomatic corps, British institutions, think-tank members, political parties, the press, etc. It will be attended by the Director-General for International Relations, Maria Badia.

Monday, 12 September

6:30 pm. San Lorenzo degli Speziali church (Via in Miranda 10, Roma). Concert by the group Capella de Ministrers and official reception. The Italy Delegation of the Catalan Government is holding an event to mark the Catalan National Day and the 700th anniversary of the death of Ramon Llull. There will be a concert by the group Capella de Ministrers, followed by an official reception to which Catalans living in Italy will be invited, along with representatives of Italian institutions, political parties, the media and the diplomatic corps resident in Rome. It will be attended by the Director-General for Multilateral and European Affairs, Manel Manonelles.

Tuesday, 13 September

6:30 pm. Newseum – news and journalism museum. (555 Pennsylvania Ave NW, Washington, DC 20001): Official reception. The US, Mexico and Canada Delegation of the Catalan Government is holding a reception to mark the Catalan National Day, attended by members of US institutions, and other American and Catalan notables. It will be attended by the Secretary for Foreign and European Union Affairs, Jordi Solé.
