Parliament of Catalonia
The Parliament of Catalonia is made up of 135 “deputies” or members who are returned for constituencies with the following distribution: Barcelona: 85; Girona: 17; Lleida: 15; Tarragona: 18. MPs are elected by secret, direct, equal, free and universal suffrage.
The electoral system laid down by the Statute of Autonomy of Catalonia is proportional: seats in Parliament are distributed among the electoral lists in proportion to the votes each one has obtained. The electoral formula used to allocate seats is the D’Hondt method, applying the legal threshold of 3% of valid votes to each constituency.
The constituencies are the parts into which a territory is divided for the purposes of elections. There are four constituencies in Catalonia: Barcelona, Tarragona, Lleida and Girona.
