Dr. Steve Carpenter has been awarded the Ramon Margalef Prize in Ecology 2018, the highest accolade awarded by the Generalitat, together with the Premi Internacional Catalunya (Cataonia International Prize). The award ceremony will be held on 17 December.

In the fourteenth annual edition, the jury recognised his "creative and original work, which has transformed our understanding of ecosystems". In particular, Carpenter's creativity and dedication to his discipline, limnology, is highly notable. This has provided significant and ongoing improvements to the understanding of lakes and the rational use of water resources.

14 years acknowledging ecology leaders
With the Ramon Margalef Prize in Ecology, the Generalitat has, since 2004, acknowledged people from all over the world who work towards the progress of breakthroughs in ecological science. The award is granted in honour of the memory of Professor Ramon Margalef (Barcelona, 1919-2004), one of the world's leading advocates, acknowledged for his contribution to scientific and intellectual work in the field of modern ecology.

The prize totals 80,000 euros and a piece of artwork in memory of Ramon Margalef. The previous annual edition recognised Harold Mooney.

This year, the award ceremony will be held on 17 December
